PAWS Chicago's Adoptable Animals
Thanks to all who supported PAWS Chicago and the Chicagoland shelter/rescue groups at Angels with Tails!
Please visit pawschicago.org for currently available cats and dogs a the adoption center.
Some of the participating rescues and shelters will do on-site adoptions after which the animal will go home with the adopter immediately; others require a potential adopter to go through a standard process that may include reference checks and/or home visits before an animal can be adopted and go home with the adopter.
Some organizations adopt on a first come/ first served basis assuming all adoption requirements are met. On-site adopters typically require the entire household, including any current resident dogs, be present to meet the animal before they are adopted. A number of the organizations will only adopt animals to homes where current pets are spayed/neutered.
Come prepared to complete an application on-site, including reference and veterinary contact information and to provide proof of: age and residence, and pet provisions in lease/condominium association regulations, including weight/breed restrictions
About PAWS Chicago
PAWS Chicago opened the Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic in 2000 in Little Village, serving Chicago's most under-resourced communities. As the largest free and low-cost spay/neuter clinic in Chicago, the Lurie Clinic performed more than 17,000 spay/neuter surgeries last year, the majority fully subsidized for families on Medicaid and those animals most in need.
In 2011, PAWS Chicago launched the GusMobile Spay/Neuter Van. As the mobile counterpart to the Lurie Clinic, the GusMobile provides free and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations and distributes humane education in the neighborhoods where the largest number of stray animals originate.
In 2007, PAWS Chicago opened the Adoption & Humane Center, a state-of-the-art, cageless, No Kill shelter located in the vibrant Lincoln Park neighborhood. Last year, more than 4,000 homeless pets found loving homes through the Adoption Center. Please come visit at 1997 N. Clybourn Avenue!
Since its founding, PAWS Chicago has relied heavily on the support of the community. With a small staff and no government funding, PAWS Chicago's life-saving work is accomplished solely because of the time, dedication and commitment of generous supporters who continue to help save homeless pets.
PAWS Chicago is rated a four-star charity by Charity Navigator, the nation's largest independent charity evaluator, for efficient use of donor funds. Please consider helping PAWS Chicago build a No Kill city by returning the enclosed envelope.
History of Angels with Tails
In 1998, PAWS Chicago launched the first Angels with Tails, an event that, for the first time, brought together shelters and rescue groups to showcase Chicago's homeless pets available for adoption on the sidewalks and storefronts along Michigan Avenue and Oak Street. That day, many lives were saved and the public was first informed that a staggering 42,561 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens were needlessly killed in Chicago in 1997 alone.
With this awareness and the resulting media attention, the community became more involved, wanting to help solve this once hidden problem. Since that day, the number of animals killed each year in Chicago has been reduced by more than half.
But there is still much work to be done to reach the ultimate mission of making Chicago a No Kill city where animals are no longer killed because they are homeless. PAWS Chicago and all of the shelters and rescue organizations you see today are working diligently to make this dream for homeless pets a reality.
